Scoliosis - How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Scolisis Psse

When you hear the word scoliosis, it often comes with uncertainty and can feel overwhelming. It's natural to wonder: Will it get worse? Does it need bracing? Is surgery required?

The good news is that physiotherapy can play a powerful role in managing scoliosis - not just watching and waiting, but actively working towards better alignment, strength and confidence. It can help both adults and children, irrespective of the curve type/age/sex.

At Health Point Physiotherapy, we have developed a special program for managing scoliosis. It's based on our international training in the ‘BSPTS-Concept by Rigo’ qualification, one of the most effective methods for non-surgical management of scoliosis.

The first step is a thorough assessment to determine whether you or your child actually have scoliosis and if yes, which type it is. It also helps identify areas of pain and weakness. The treatment program is subsequently prepared based on the assessment outcomes, making it specific to you.

While the main part of the program involves PSSE (Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises) it can also include the following:

  • Clinical Pilates to help improve core strength, posture and general muscle strength
  • Real Time Ultrasound to assess the core strength and ensure correct activation
  • Electrotherapy to help manage pain if needed (it can be used either in isolation or in conjunction with PSSE/Clinical Pilates
