Clinical Pilates — The Health Point Difference

Unlike mainstream Pilates, Clinical Pilates at Health Point Physiotherapy is conducted by qualified Physiotherapists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists with a sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and biomechanics.

Our expert Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists will deliver far better, focused results than regular Pilates classes. Our personalised Clinical Pilates programs are tailored to the specific needs of each individual taking into account their areas of strengths and weaknesses and their goals.

Our main aim in your Pilates program is to develop your core stability and posture which helps to restore and maintain your musculoskeletal health. The first step is our unique Full Body Assessment which helps highlight any current or future musculoskeletal issues. This allows us to devise a plan to help you achieve and maintain your health goals. Our unique physio bracket, designed by us, results in a 100% accurate muscle strength measurement.

We use Real Time Ultrasound to assess your core muscles and make sure you understand how to activate them correctly.

Our Clinical Pilates programs can help with a range of conditions including, neck and joint pain, scoliosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, incontinence, cardiovascular conditions and many others.

Treatment Success For Pain and Poor Strength

“By the time I started Pilates, I’d had a lower back pain and weak knees. After just 3 months of exercises I feel myself much fitter and stronger: my back pain has gone, my knees are better and my body is better balanced, so I can do my favorite exercises. I only could achieve all that because of the wonderful and knowing teachers. Thank You.” – Zosya Shvartsman

Treatment Success For Back Pain

“I work in the building industry, where there is a lot of heavy lifting, a lot of which is done incorrectly. After hurting my back several times at work, I decided to try Clinical Pilates at HealthPoint Physiotherapy. After several months of working on my core stability muscles which supported and strengthened my back, and learning the correct bending and lifting techniques, my core muscles and back felt much stronger. After 6 months of attending clinical pilates several times a week, I have not had serious back pain/incident, even when I have a hard day’s work of lifting and bending. I am very gratefully to Margarita for teaching me correct lifting/bending techniques and for strengthening my core muscles to protect my back. I will attending clinical pilates to maintain and enhance the good core stability I have achieved as it is allowing me to work without taking time off for back pain.” – Anthony Massarin

Treatment Success For Fibromyalgia

“In 2005 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I had high blood pressure and high sugar levels. I felt severe pain in all parts of my body. My GP recommended Margarita Gurevich to me. Margarita is a hard working person, conscientious, intellectual with her new way, ideas and methods to help people.

Margarita assessed me for more than 1 hour, testing all the muscles of my body and found the weakest part. She chose Clinical Pilates for me. We started with the easiest exercises then slowly going to harder ones, step by step in individual classes and when I became stronger in a small group. After 7 weeks I had a reassessment. The result was amazing. I could sit in front of my computer, walk and control my posture. My balance became better, even my blood pressure was normal without medication. I came back to life. With greatest thanks. Good luck in your job” – Sofia Sandomirskaya

General Physiotherapy

These techniques are routinely used for a variety of conditions as the first line treatments where other physiotherapy modalities e.g. electrotherapy are not yet indicated. They often provide a fast relief of pain and inflammation, improve posture, balance and movement and lead to other health benefits but in some cases there are needs to supplement general physiotherapy with some more effective modalities.

Physiotherapists are health professionals who have sound knowledge of the human body. This knowledge, when coupled with manual techniques, can help provide relief from a large range of musculoskeletal issues.

Physiotherapy treatments can involve the following:

  • Traction (gentle pulling on different joints)
  • Mobilisations (movement of the joint)
  • McKenzie treatment method
  • Massage
  • Heat/cold therapy
  • Retraining of posture and movements as well
  • Specific strengthening and stretching exercises to aid in your recovery
  • Taping techniques which can help retrain posture, decrease pain and protect from injury
  • Prenatal, antenatal and postnatal therapy
  • Incontinence therapy

What are the benefits?

  • Help reduce pain caused by arthritis (osteo / rheumatoid) & other musculoskeletal disorders (inc. fibromyalgia, joint replacements & post-fractures)
  • Improved balance & posture
  • Assist in the control of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders such as diabetes or obesity
  • Enjoy the psychological & emotional benefits of regular exercise and social interaction

Electrotherapy and Ultrasound

Not only does electrotherapy minimise or abolish your symptoms, it gets to the root of the problem and treats the cause. This means that better treatment results are achieved and reoccurrences are less likely.

Electrotherapy not only relieves symptoms but addresses their cause, leading to better outcomes and fewer recurrences. Using pain‑free, non‑invasive electrical currents, it stimulates the body’s healing processes, blocks pain signals before they reach the brain, and triggers natural painkillers like endorphins.

It can be used alone or alongside other physiotherapy treatments and medications. Common applications include pain and inflammation from sports injuries, back and neck issues, arthritis, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, mastitis, and more.

The Health Point Difference
At Health Point Physiotherapy, we focus on long‑term benefits, not just short‑term relief. Every treatment includes a tailored home exercise program to help you maintain results.

Electrostimulation
Uses electrical currents to activate muscles and body systems. Improves strength, tone, and function.

Indications:

  • Prevents muscle atrophy and thrombosis after immobilization
  • Post‑stroke rehabilitation
  • Supports bowel, gall bladder, and bladder function
  • Assists with obesity management

Interferential
Electrodes deliver currents that block pain signals and release natural painkillers. Feels like mild tingling, never painful.

Indications:

  • Neck, back, and joint pain
  • Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint stiffness, contractures
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow
  • Incontinence
  • IBS, dyspepsia
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

Ultrasound
Uses sound waves (not electrical currents) to promote healing. Produces gentle warmth at the treatment site. Often combined with interferential.

Indications:

  • Neck, back, and joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendinopathies
  • Mastitis

Magnetotherapy
Creates magnetic flux for therapeutic effect. Produces mild warmth, often paired with interferential.

Indications:

  • Neck, back, and joint pain
  • Joint stiffness, contractures

Real Time Ultrasound & Physio Bracket

Real Time Ultrasound provides instant feedback to make sure that you are activating your muscles correctly. Physio bracket allows for 100% accurate muscle strength measurement.

Real Time Ultrasound provides instant feedback to make sure that you are activating your muscles correctly. Leads to much higher treatment results. Physio bracket allows for 100% accurate muscle strength measurement. Designed by our team and only available at Health Point Physiotherapy.

Have you ever been told that you need to learn to engage your core or your pelvic floor muscles correctly? Do you know the feeling of trying to do what you are told but not having a very clear understanding of how to do it? Real Time Ultrasound solves this problem.

Real Time Ultrasound allows you to see on the screen how the muscles work. Our physiotherapists will explain to you which muscles you need to engage and then show you, on the screen, how they work as you activate them. This will leave you reassured that you are doing the exercises correctly.

At our practice we use Real Time Ultrasound routinely as part of your first Clinical Pilates session and during each reassessment. Our graded 12 point scale system allows you to see progress as your core muscles get stronger. The change is then reflected in your updated Pilates program following each reassessment. This means that the exercises are always suited to your current level.

Real Time Ultrasound can help with the following:

  • Back pain
  • Pelvic instability
  • Post-partum abdominal separation and weakness
  • Incontinence and pelvic floor weakness
  • Sports injuries

Physio Bracket

Physio bracket is one of Health Point Physiotherapy’s unique inventions. Usually to test your muscle strength you push against a device, generally a muscle tester, which is held by the physiotherapist. This results in a high variability of readings, which is affected by the physiotherapist’s own strength.

By pushing against the muscle tester which is attached to the physio bracket the physiotherapist’s strength is taken out of the equation, resulting in a 100% accurate muscle strength measurement. This reading is used for subsequent reassessments to track your progress and modify your program accordingly.

SCENAR Therapy

Improves local blood circulation enhancing oxygen delivery to the affected tissues; helps reduce pain and inflammation and reactivates your body’s self-regulatory mechanism, speeding up the recovery process.

SCENAR therapy helps to improve local blood circulation, thus improving oxygen delivery to the affected tissues. This helps to reduce pain and inflammation as well as reactivating your body’s self-regulatory mechanism, speeding up the recovery process. Great for headaches, back, neck and joint pain and inflammatory conditions such bursitis and tenosynovitis.

Also used extensively for treatment of conditions with no known cause once serious pathology has been ruled out, such as irritable bowel syndrome and other problems related to the gut as well as other conditions.

Health Point Physiotherapy staff are real experts in SCENAR therapy. Our physiotherapists have been trained in this method in Russia, where it was originally developed. We have now been using SCENAR therapy successfully for over five years and have patients coming from various Melbourne suburbs to make sure they receive professional help from the experts they can trust.

The SCENAR itself is a small hand held device with multiple settings adjusted specifically for each person. Using electricity and its’ inbuilt technology it is able to react to each individual and uses electrical feedback from the treatment area to focus on the exact point for maximum results.

This treatment is non-invasive and widely used in Europe. As an effective form of treatment word is finally starting to spread and its’ popularity in Australia is growing fast. Effects felt generally after just a few sessions.

We are STAA Members and have been active participants at the 4th Australasian SCENAR Conference, presenting a Case Study on the use of SCENAR therapy for treatment of functional dyspepsia.

Benefits of this method:

  • No negative side effects
  • Very few contraindications
  • No medications required
  • Extremely wide range of indications

Treatment success for sore neck

“As a full-time nurse in the Aged care facility and a mum to a toddler, I cannot afford to have a stiff and painful neck. The problems with my neck started a few years ago. I have tried heat packs, TENS machine, massages and usual physiotherapy – all of the therapies would provide only some relieve and just for a short time.

The worst happened after the birth of my son two years ago: I have returned from the hospital with the stiff neck, unable to move or lay down, with constant pain accelerated on movement. Exhausted and without sleep (I could only manage by sitting on the couch trying not to move) I have tried all the usual therapies for four days with no success, when my mum suggested to visit Margarita. At first I said no as I could not drive after Caesarean and was afraid to leave my newborn son. However the pain was so bad that I decided to try.

Margarita was so nice to see me on her day off. I was crying from the pain all the way to her clinic feeling every bump on the road. I could not believe that after a 30 minute SCENAR therapy session I felt better – the pain did not go away completely but the tension was almost gone and the pain level decreased significantly. On return home I have dropped into bed and slept for 14 hours – dead to the entire world (God knows how my husband managed with our baby and how he fed him!!!). 3 sessions later I felt like a new person.

Being a busy but lazy person I am no so good at doing exercises even though Margarita keeps suggesting her classes to me, so my neck problems keep coming back – but I know what to do now – call Health Point and organise appointment! She also treated successfully skin problems that I had. I haven’t heard about any other physiotherapists that use same technology as she. I keep recommending Margarita to anybody who needs quick and effective treatment. – Anna Sheran”

Drug Phoresis

Feel better quicker with this highly effective treatment. Drugs will be delivered directly to the affected area, reducing the chance of side effects and lowering the concentration of the drug that’s required.

In those cases where the desired treatment outcome is not reached by using electrotherapy by itself we utilise drug phoresis. This method uses similar electrodes to the ones used for inteferential therapy, however this method utilises specific medications. We try to start with natural medications and if this fails we move on to either anti-inflammatories or specific drugs as prescribed by your doctor.

Drug delivery using electrical current (iontophoresis), ultrasound (phonophoresis) or magnetic flux (magnetophoresis) is an effective way to help drive the medication directly to the painful area where it is needed and often requires less medication than if taken orally or as a cream.

Benefits:

  • Allows drug delivery specifically to the affected organ or tissue
  • Avoids or minimises adverse reactions of the drug
  • Maintains local drug effect for a prolonged period
  • Reduces the drug dose required
  • Combined effect of electrotherapy modalities and drugs

Indications:

  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)

ADAAPT

We run a specialised program for depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other mental health disorders.

Depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other mental health disorders are very common. This is why we, at Health Point Physiotherapy, have developed a highly specialised program to help patients deal with these conditions – the ADAAPT (Anti-Depression and Anti-Anxiety Physiotherapy) Program.

The ADAAPT Program utilises highly effective alternative treatment options for mental health conditions. These include:

  • physiotherapy and exercise
  • electroacupuncture
  • phytotherapy and other nutritional supplements
  • dietary modifications

While pharmacotherapy (antidepressants, tranquillizers and other psychotropic medications) is usually prescribed as the first-line treatment, it might not be suitable or effective for some people for a variety of reasons. These reasons could include:

  • cases of treatment-resistant
  • conditions due to individual
  • tolerance to the effect of the pharmacotherapy
  • severe side effects
  • contraindications to some medications
  • interactions with other medications or supplements
  • other factors

Some people also decide to discontinue pharmacotherapy due to pregnancy or lactation, aggravation of comorbidities or are reluctant to take medications because of their personal views. In such cases people might require alternative treatment options to manage their conditions without pharmacotherapy or in addition to it.
