Health Programs

Our range of healthcare programs been carefully created to be extremely effective in the prevention and treatment of many issues affecting men, woman, children and the elderly.

Weight management

Attaining and maintaining the right weight is a vital part of our health maintenance approach.

Attaining and maintaining the right weight is a vital part of our health maintenance approach.

Our weight management programs are aimed at achieving healthy weight parameters. This helps in improving both the overall health and wellbeing and the body shape and appearance.

The programs are based on 2 major components: weight normalization through weight reduction (in the case of such conditions as obesity) or weight gain (when a person is underweight) and weight maintenance.

Major approaches:
Clinical Pilates, cardio (HIIT), home exercise, balneotherapy, electrotherapy (if needed), dietary advice.

Monitoring parameters include:
Weight, BMI, central (abdominal) adiposity, body fat, dietary requirements (energy intake and expenditure, ration nutritional adequacy e.g. essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals).

Incontinence and Women’s Health

Health Point Physiotherapy offers a wide array of treatments for a range of different health issues that may trouble women at some point in their lives.

One of the most debilitating conditions that often affects women, as well as men, is incontinence. This includes stress and urge urinary incontinence as well as fecal incontinence. With the right treatment, however, it can be successfully managed and often completely resolved.

What does Health Point Physiotherapy treatment involve?

Thorough pelvic floor assessment performed on your first session enables us to correctly identify the cause of your incontinence
Analysis of contributing factors such as the physical exercise you are doing and your diet to provide recommendations on how to successfully manage and treat your particular type of incontinence

Regular use of Real Time Ultrasound which means that you learn how to correctly engage both your core muscles and pelvic floor muscles helping to manage and treat incontinence
Specific core and pelvic floor exercise program helping to improve both the strength and control of these muscles in order to get your incontinence under control

Progression of exercises to make them functional so that your pelvic floor muscles will engage automatically during your everyday activities
Electrotherapy is sometimes used to assist when exercises alone are not enough (refer to our article Electrotherapy for Treatment of Urinary Incontinence)

Osteoporosis

As women get older, particularly after menopause, their bones can lose essential minerals such as calcium, making them more brittle and more likely to fracture. One of the best types of prevention and management of osteoporosis is exercise.

At Health Point Physiotherapy we are constantly helping women, as they get older, maintain their physical fitness through Clinical Pilates. While the exercises are always challenging our physiotherapists make sure that they are safe and that you are exercising at the correct intensity for you. Click here to find out more about our Clinical Pilates sessions.

Besides Clinical Pilates we also offer advise on other types of exercises which will be beneficial for you as well as provide you with a specific home exercise program.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common condition affecting women of different ages. It occurs as a results of an infection such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia of the female reproductive tract. Apart from causing pain and discomfort if left untreated it could become chronic and lead to severe complications including infertility.

At our practice we use electrotherapy techniques such as magnetotherapy or interferential current which were shown in clinical studies to provide effective treatment of the disease. The results are reduced inflammation, fast relief of pain, tenderness and other PID symptoms. The course of electrotherapy is followed by Clinical Pilates or specific exercise sessions. These treatments improve the blood circulation in the pelvis helping to further reduce the inflammation, maintain the therapeutic effect longer and prevent recurrences.

Balneotherapy is another very effective approach to treat PID, especially if it becomes chronic. Use of mineral spas for PID is implemented in many health resorts in Europe leading to improving the conditions. We use balneotherapy where indicated for treating PID patients in our practice.

Pilates for Expectant and New Mums

Find out how physiotherapy can help with mastitis and how Clinical Pilates can help you stay active and strong throughout pregnancy, result in an easier labour and help you get back into shape after birth.

Not only is it a form of exercise that keeps you active at this time (which can be difficult), but it is ideal to help your body cope with all the changes you go through, up until and after child birth.

Pilates for Expectant and New Mums — The Health Point Difference
Our specialised Pilates classes help your body prepare and deal with the numerous changes that pregnancy brings. These changes affect your spine and joints during pregnancy and can last for up to 6 months after child birth. Doing Clinical Pilates while pregnant often also results in a significantly easier labour.

With all classes run by a physiotherapist there’s one less excuse not to exercise before, during and after pregnancy. Click here to find out more about our Clinical Pilates sessions.

Mastisis
Besides pre and post-natal Pilates classes we are one of the few clinics to offer therapeutic ultrasound as an effective and drug free treatment for mastitis which can be quite painful and debilitating for many women.

Therapeutic ultrasound works by unblocking the milk ducts. In the majority of cases antibiotics are not required. Research has proven that is a safe and extremely effective treatment for mastitis. At Health Point Physiotherapy we have observed a marked improvement, often complete resolution, after only 1-3 sessions.

Incontinence

We offer physiotherapy consultations to help with incontinence issues and have Real Time Ultrasound on site to aid with assessment of these problems. We can also help with the following:

  • Back and pelvic pain
  • Coccyx pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Wound pain post Caesarean
  • Upper back and neck pain during breastfeeding

Health for Mothers

Changes During Pregnancy and After Child Birth
During your pregnancy, many changes occur in your body in preparation for child birth. These changes affect your musculoskeletal system during pregnancy and also for up to 6 months after child birth.

Hormonal and Muscular Changes
During pregnancy, hormones are released into your body which make your muscles and ligaments more lax (in preparation for child birth). This makes your spine and joints more vulnerable to injury or aches and pains – especially low back pain or pelvic joint pain. As well as this, you are carrying the added weight of your baby.

How Can Clinical Pilates Help With These Changes During Pregnancy?
Pilates is all about improving strength and activation of muscles that support your spine and joints. During pregnancy and after child birth, your spine and joints are vulnerable to injury because the muscles and ligaments that support them have been weakened, stretched and more lax.

It is important to be careful of the type of exercise you do while pregnant and the type of exercise and when to start exercise after child birth. At Health Point Physiotherapy, our Pilates (or Preggilates) is conducted by qualified Physiotherapists who are specifically trained for this. As well as this, we conduct a comprehensive full body assessment prior to any exercise so that a Pilates program can be specifically designed to benefit you and your individual needs. Each “Preggilates” session will be closely supervised to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly and so you can get the most out of them.

Strength
Pilates helps with improving the strength and activation of your lower abdominals and pelvic floor muscles (the ‘core’ muscles). Your pelvic floor muscles carry the weight of your baby for 9 months which stretches and weakens them, whilst your abdominal muscles stretch over your growing uterus. Your pelvic floor is also even more stretched and sometimes torn during child birth.

Activating and strengthening your pelvic floor, during and after pregnancy, helps prevent complications such as incontinence, after birth and later on.

Alleviating Risk of Injury
Both your abdominals and your pelvic floor are also major supports of your spine, which are important as ever when carrying a baby – during and after pregnancy! As a new mum different activities – such as lifting, bending down to play, breast feeding, pushing prams – can be strenuous to your body after birth, so it is important to be strong and have well supported joints to undertake these activities without aches and pains.
Physiotherapy can also provide treatment for the following pre and post natal conditions:

• Back and pelvic pain
• Coccyx pain
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Wound pain post Caesarean
• Upper back and neck pain during breastfeeding
• Mastitis

Healthy Weight
It is natural and healthy for women to put on some weight during pregnancy, to help the growth of your baby. Pilates is a form of exercise that pregnant women and new mums can undertake to help maintain a healthy weight or for weight loss post birth. Strengthening and improving muscle tone helps boost your metabolism which helps with healthy weight control. Improving your metabolism also helps to burn excess fat in the body. Meanwhile, increasing the tone of your muscles also helps you look and feel better.

Sporty Mums
Pilates will help you safely return to any sports or activities undertaken prenatally. It is important to take care when returning back to sports as your joints are not as supported and you are more prone to injury such as ankle sprains, and back and pelvic injuries.

Treatment Success For Back pain

“I decided to do clinical pilates with Margarita during the course of my second pregnancy. I had suffered severe back pain during my first pregnancy, and was determined to look after my back the second time around. And I am so happy that I did! I attended pilates twice per week up until 36 weeks and I am confident to say because of this my back remained strong and healthy and I did not experience the pain that I felt first time around. I noticed my posture improve and I had techniques to follow to ensure that my back did not suffer. I cant thank Margarita enough for her support and knowledge during this time. I continue to attend pilates now, and my back continues to thrive. Thanks so much Margarita….” – Yulia Srugo 4/9/11

Treatment Success For Mastitis

“To think that there are so many breastfeeding mothers in Australia suffering unnecessarily with mastitis and blocked milk ducts when a simple session with a physiotherapist can resolve the problem! My stubborn blockage was cleared in 6 minutes of treatment with Margarita! Whilst I have heard that it is common in some other developed countries, using therapeutic ultrasound to treat mastitis is still mostly unheard of in Australia. This is unfortunate.

I was suffering from mastitis due to a very painful blocked milk duct lasting for over a week and eventually covering a quarter of my left breast. It was stubbornly refusing to clear, despite all the usual methods (massage, heat, antibiotics etc). Desperate, someone mentioned therapeutic ultrasound to me and I did a search on the internet. They warned me it would be hard to find practitioners who are aware of its use for treating mastitis, let alone any who were actually already utilising it for this purpose, and sure enough, my GP did not know, and Health Point Physiotherapy was one of the few places in Australia that I could find on the internet whose websites even mentioned it! Thank God they were in Melbourne.

I went to see Margarita and 6 minutes of treatment later, the blockage had cleared! What relief! Margarita provided friendly and professional service. I would highly recommend her and therapeutic ultrasound to anyone”. – Melanie, Melbourne, Australia.”

Healthcare for Children

Find out how physiotherapy and Pilates can help with improving sports and academic performance, managing scoliosis and treating conditions like Perthes’ disease, Osgood-Schlatter lesion and Sever’s disease.

Pilates for Children
Pilates designed especially for kids of various ages

Like adults, kids need regular exercise. Our fascination with technology, however, is fast causing more musculoskeletal pain and problems than ever before, mainly due to the lack of exercise and prolonged time spent in damaging postures as we sit at the computer or play on the iPad.

With education and fun Pilates sessions we have the opportunity to prevent a wide range of musculoskeletal issues before they develop. Our Clinical Pilates program designed specifically for children takes into account their physical and psychological differences as well as their individual interests.

Pilates is also a great way to help kids recover quickly from conditions which often occur as they grow and which can sometimes keep them out of sports for an extended period of time.

Physiotherapy for Kids

Over the years our physiotherapists have helped children successfully treat many conditions which are particularly common for them, such as Perthes’ disease, Osgood-Schlatter lesion, Sever’s disease and others.

The first step is always to reduce the symptoms by correctly identifying the cause and implementing the most effective treatment. The second step is to prevent recurrence.

At our practice we successfully use the following:

  • Electrotherapy techniques such as interferential, TENS and ultrasound
  • SCENAR therapy
  • Hands on techniques such as massage and mobilizations
  • Specific exercises

How are Children Different to Adults?

Unlike adults, children are still growing. Hence, many of the differences in the types of injuries sustained by children as opposed to adults have to do with the differences in the structure of growing bone as compared to adult bone.

The tendon attachment sites in children provide a relatively weak cartilaginous attachment. As a result, children are more likely to injure cartilage and bone or completely avulse (tear) the attachment site of tendons.

During rapid growth phases, bone lengthens before muscles and tendons are able to stretch correspondingly and develop the necessary strength and coordination to control the newly lengthened bone. This can also lead to muscle and tendon injuries. Also, growth temporarily reduces coordination which manifests as awkwardness in movements while exercising and playing sport.

Besides these physical differences, children, by nature, are more impulsive than adults, which can also increase the risk of sustaining an injury during exercise.

Therefore it is only logical that the treatment programs for adults and children should vary. For that reason, when deciding on the best treatment approach for your child, our physiotherapists take into account not just the injury but the child’s age, the sport they are involved in, their fitness level and other factors.

Scoliosis Management

If your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis physiotherapy and Clinical Pilates can do a lot. Our physiotherapists are committed to helping your child manage their scoliosis conservatively as best as possible.

The main aims are to change the scoliosis posture and improve the core stability which lead to the following benefits for your child:

  • Reduced likelihood of scoliosis progression
  • Improved cosmetic appearance
  • Reduced pain
  • Improved muscle tone and strength
  • Improved ability to participate in sport and other physical activities

We use Real Time Ultrasound to assess your child’s core strength. That way the physiotherapist, as well as you and your child, will see on the screen how the core muscles work. This will ensure that correct activation is achieved.

When pain is a significant issue we implement specific physiotherapy techniques including SCENAR therapy, soft tissue massage and mobilizations as well as electrotherapy modalities including interferential and ultrasound.

One of the biggest challenges is getting your child to exercise regularly. We overcome this hurdle by working on your child’s posture and core during our Pilates sessions in a fun way. We also tailor the sessions to the sports your child may already enjoy. Your child will also receive a free home exercise program. Both the Clinical Pilates program and the home program are prepared based on the outcomes of the initial Full Body Assessment which is done prior to commencing the Pilates sessions.

Gymnast’s Treatment Success Story

“Being a full time gymnast, I constantly had stress on many of my body parts. One of the main recipients of this strain is my feet, to be more specific… my ankles. A while ago, my ankles just couldn’t handle all the pressure and rolled. This happened many times and my ankles were constantly getting weaker. After many of these rollings, I finally came to Margarita’s physiotherapy/pilates class. These classes weren’t just about recovering the ankle, they were also about strengthening it. After many lessons I could feel my ankles becoming more stable and they were rolling a lot less. Not only that, but my performance in Gymnastics has improved drastically too. Margarita’s help has been crucial for me to do the sport I love.” – Daniel Shell”

ADAAPT Program

Depression, anxiety, panic attacks and other mental health disorders are very common. This is why we, at Health Point Physiotherapy, have developed a highly specialised program to help patients deal with these conditions – the ADAAPT (Anti-Depression and Anti-Anxiety Physiotherapy) Program.

The ADAAPT Program utilises highly effective alternative treatment options for mental health conditions. These include:

  • physiotherapy and exercise
  • electroacupuncture
  • phytotherapy and other nutritional supplements
  • dietary and lifestyle modifications

While pharmacotherapy (antidepressants, tranquilisers and other psychotropic medications) is usually prescribed as the first-line treatment, it might not be suitable or effective for some people for a variety of reasons. These reasons could include:

  • treatment-resistant cases
  • conditions due to individual tolerance to the effect of the pharmacotherapy
  • severe side effects
  • contraindications to some medications
  • interactions with other medications or supplements
  • other factors

Some people also decide to discontinue pharmacotherapy due to pregnancy or lactation, aggravation of comorbidities or are reluctant to take medications because of their personal views. In such cases people might require alternative treatment options to manage their conditions without pharmacotherapy or in addition to it.

Scoliosis Management

Our Scoliosis Program is based on our international training in the ‘BSPTS-Concept by Rigo’ qualification. This is one of the most effective methods for non surgical management of scoliosis.

The BSPTS is based on the original Schroth method but has since expanded to become an even more effective method for managing scoliosis.

Our Scoliosis Program centres around two main aspects:

  • Thorough diagnostic assessment
  • PSSE (Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises)

The assessment includes specific scoliosis screening as well as elements of our full body diagnostic assessment. We will look at the following:

  • Detailed general history (medical history, scoliosis specific history, your specific goals)
  • Diagnosis of structural vs functional scoliosis
  • X-Ray assessment where necessary
  • Postural assessment
  • Range of motion testing of the spine and joints as well as ligament integrity testing
  • Lung function assessment (Spirometry)

This will allow us to correctly diagnose firstly whether you actually have scoliosis and if yes, which type it is. It will also help us to determine general areas of strength and weakness.

Following the assessment we will be able to recommend the most appropriate management. This can involve the following:

  • PSSE (Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises)
  • Bracing (if needed); we will refer you to a specialist for that
  • Referral to an orthopedic surgeon (if needed); we have a great network of highly experienced orthopedic surgeons we refer to
  • Clinical Pilates
  • Specifc home exercise program
  • Ergonomic advise (work/study setup, sitting posture, schoolbag/handbag carrying etc)

Recommendations are made following the Guidelines produced by SOSORT (International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation), and the SRS (Scoliosis Research Society).

PSSE (Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises)

This method revolves around the concept of expanding the areas of the body which are collapsed due to scoliosis. This creates the necessary “space” to enable those areas of the spine which have been displaced due to the curvature to go back into optimal alignment. Thus the first step is to improve the shape, while the second step is to create the endurance necessary to translate this correct shape into:

Static postures (lying down, sitting, standing)
Dynamic postures and normal everyday activities (lifting, carrying, walking, sport, work etc)
Besides PSSE we also utilise specific home exercise programs and where necessary Clinical Pilates. We use Real Time Ultrasound as an effective biofeedback tool to assess the strength and control of the core muscles and make sure that you are engaging them correctly.

Clinical Pilates helps to train the core muscles, improve posture and address any other issues we find during the assessment. We incorporate elements of PSSE into our Clinical Pilates classes for patients with scoliosis. This serves as further training to enable you to carry over the postures you learn with PSSE into normal daily activities.

Cardio HIIT Program

What’s included in our cardio and weight management programs?

Prior to commencing the program each patient/client will receive a FREE cardio and weight assessment session. This will help us determine which program is right for you and will make it easy to track your progress and make sure that your goals are being met.

The assessment involves the following:

  • general medical and cardiovascular history
  • BMI
  • percentage of body fat
  • percentage of body water
  • girth measurements
  • spirometry (lung function testing)
  • cardiovascular assessment
  • short trial cardio (HIIT) training session

You will also get a FREE reassessment after 7 weeks.

What do the sessions look like?

The sessions involve high intensity interval training (HIIT) and will be 30 minutes in duration. They can be done as stand-alone sessions or before/after your Clinical Pilates session.

Which goals can you achieve with the programs?

  • weight loss/management
  • improved fitness
  • improved heart/lung function
  • improved immunity (specifically when it comes to respiratory viruses such as Covid-19 and others)
